Let yourself out of this box and dance the night away

Move the way you’ve always wanted to in the dim light of the swing club hallway

Place your hands on my hips and twist from this forcefield you stay

Kick your legs around the room

Hear the swing band at high volume

Let the saxophone and trombone take on every bone

Let them handle your soul like a kite

Sway these hands of yours from left to right

Quit being so uptight

Take a seat, have a smoke

When you’re done flick it out the window

On the other hand toss it on the woman who dismantled your ego

Said your dress was too short and the jangle of your frills on it made you look desperate

Don’t worry girl cause you’re the direct opposite

I do what I want without a mans approval

I whirl away my troubles in a life where I’m not seen as crucial

I’m disposable to them but not on this here light tiled dance floor

Here I’m seen as more by the women and men around me

The life of the women’s resurrection party

I dance in my heels

Effortless perfection like the eeriness of a cat

Watch me in jealousy from the lone corner you sat

It’s only smooth sailing from here

Got a job, changed my hair to a bob

It’s over

I’m just like you overconfident men now

In fact I’ve surpassed you with this flamboyant night on the town

I no longer have to write my frustrations down in a diary

From now on I can work in the factories that you tried to keep from happening

Watch me slide and pounce from side to side

Watch the singer’s vocals wrap around the microphone no longer trying to hide

Come dance with me if you see me equally

I tug on your suspenders and have you swing with me

I enjoy bein the life of the party

Frills swaying as the music is playing

Not at home watching kids is a rush of exhilaration

No whining, no crying, not a child in sight

The future’s lookin bright

I cook for myself and no one else

It’s over and I’m free

Don’t have to pretend to sit up straight and appreciate high tea

I can be who I wanna be

See who I wanna see

It’s time to let go of your masculine, sexist, fantastical dream

Because all the women just woke up and it’s over

I’m a flapper

The life of the party
