Why would I want to make those people comfortable

The people who give me 5’s out of 10’s And that’s being generous

When they don’t even provide me with societal suits and ties

You see my luxurious curls wind and twist in every direction

And I walk into this interview ready to tear down every. piece. of competition

When you look up I can see it in the way you cut eyes with me

The way your hand twitches

The way your heads tilts in curiosity

And as soon as I walk in the door

You look me up and down as if I am a mysterious object that has connected to your shoe from the floor

And honestly ma’am...

I am tired of being looked up and down like a Rubix cube

So please let me go ahead and solve it for you

I am Black.

I am empowered and present myself as such

If this infuriates you?

Well I really can’t and won’t do much

So don’t feel threatened

I’m not here to tear down your palace

Your Taj Mahal of perfection

Because let me explain it to you

I am imperfection which makes me human perfection

So if I’m being hated because you’re infuriated that my black magic has not deteriorated

And the fact that my emotions will not be dictated by the fact that you are frustrated that my underlying aggravation can not be cultivated

It is because when I walked in

I already knew your image of me was 360 rotated

So if we could get to the task at hand and complete the interview I would be grateful

Because I refuse to slick back my right as an African American woman that is my hair to make you feel comfortable

Because I am NOT a new pair of shoes from the mall..

My job is not to make myself feel small so that you can feel tall so that I can become apart of your white privileged scheme to make me into a controllable doll
