-SILENCE-

Many people seem to agree that silence is invaluable, but the universe that we live in doesn’t seem to agree.

Frankly, I wouldn’t put it past the world for creating a living arrangement with

constant pulses of sound that purposefully make silence unattainable. Even in the

earliest time of day when the people around are warm beneath their blankets, drifting between the worlds created by their dreams, you think there is silence.

But there is still the hum of machinery’s song in my ears accompanied by the cries of birds beyond the window. I take in the repetitive noise of inhales and exhales that won’t be stopped until my death arrives, but who knows when that’ll come to pass.

When deciding to work early in the morning, putting pencil to paper is yet another symphony. I can hear every scratch that the harsh lead inflicts on the paper every time I make a darting motion to mark my thoughts down.

And this is nothing compared to the cacophony of sounds that bounce and twirl between the classroom walls. Desks clamber together like shifting boulders. Chairs

creak with the sound of whispering mice when tilted in by defiant students. When already cautioned not to do so, they test the limits of gravity and scream in agony

while on the floor realizing how far they’ve fallen.

So, what does one do when trying to escape the inescapable that is sound, that corners them at every angle? Nothing, because they know that silence is unattainable.

If anyone were on a journey to find true silence, I’d stop them in their tracks and advise them to rethink. Because that mission is a grasp at straws and nonexistent

stars. They must live with the sounds that will draw them to insanity.
